The heart of Doom Eternal is the mechanics of the previous game. If you watch the gameplay from the outside, you probably won’t notice the new features at all. Just like before, the hero runs through demon-filled arenas, aptly switches from one weapon to another, tears the monsters into shreds, cuts them with a chainsaw and collects resources. This is exactly what makes the old Doom chapters an ideal recipe for a shooter. It still works, but with a few welcome tweaks.
The key new additions are a meat hook on the double-barrel and a new ability called dash. Both of this things solve the issue of moving. Movement in Doom is life: picking your path through the location wisely is vitally important to stay alive. And while the hook allows you to quickly reap your way into a crowd of enemies, the dash helps you to instantly flee if the action grows too hot. The value here is in the details. The hook can be used to grab onto any monster, including Cacodemons soaring above the ground. In other words, with a little experience you can spend a certain amount of time in the air moving between flying enemies and energy trampolines.
Other inclusions are also important – they help you to control what’s happening at different distances. At long range, you’ll benefit from explosive shells and cryo grenades. The former will blow small bunches of weak demons into pieces, the latter will freeze those hard to get in the crosshairs. In melee combat, you can now use Blood punch that charges from finish-offs and special resources that sometimes can be found on the arena. Besides, closer to the finale the hero gets an energy sword cleaving and killing any demon with one swing – except bosses, of course.
Aside from bullets and health, you can now also get armor from the bodies of the killed enemies. For that, you must use a new shoulder flamethrower making the dying monster to eject poisonous green resources while burning. All this and much more is waiting for you in Doom Eternal: Deluxe Edition! Check out this ultimate release of the latest Doom chapter and enjoy the full package of new features!
