Everyone knows that Doom is cool. Even now, the first two versions that saw the light of the day almost three decades ago, look great and don’t pale in comparison to modern shooters. Was the latest edition, a loud release called Doom Eternal, able to retain the spirit and appeal of the original while taking it to a whole new graphical level? We’re about to find out!

Saving and multiplying the crazy thrill of the classic chapters wasn’t an easy task. One way to achieve it was expanding the list of the protagonist’s abilities. Now you can switch between regular and ice grenades and shower the demons with a spurt of fire from a flamethrower to receive armor bonuses. The mobility was increased thanks to a dash that can be done twice with an interval of a few seconds both on the ground and in the air. Finally, the finish-offs charge the powerful Blood punch turning small demons into a pile of bloody shreds.

Speaking of demons, they have been upgraded together with the hero. More precisely, there are now more of them and many of the debutants will give you a hard time. Some of them teleport, others shoot non-stop, there are those enhancing and reviving their colleagues. Handling all this variety poses quite a challenge, but there is a loophole you can use to your advantage – the demons now have unique vulnerabilities. In previous parts, it didn’t really matter what weapons you were using to smash your enemies – they all worked well. In Doom Eternal, Knights and Barons are much easier to stop with a machine gun while flying monsters are more vulnerable to a ballista. Ordinary soldiers can be instantly stupefied with a shotgun.

Moreover, many enemies now have weak spots for targeted fire. For instance, you can significantly undermine the firepower of Arachnotrons and Mancubus by shooting off their turrets while Drones die from one single headshot lavishly throwing around health and cartridges. Blood punch works well against armored demons, while tiny and fast ones can be brought down with a cryo grenade. If you try to deal with everyone using the same weapon instead, you will quickly get overwhelmed. The new edition forces you to keep all the new skills and arsenal in your head to put up a decent fight. All that makes Doom Eternal a highly dynamic, intense and fascinating shooter that leaves you no single second to gasp for air. Once you plunge into the battle, there is no way out of it until all of your enemies are down. Are you ready to kick their evil asses?
