Remakes of the classics are a shaky path where you always risk to slip in comparison with the original. Doom 2016 has successfully managed to avoid that bringing some new peculiarities into the old familiar gameplay. Look forward to large levels, arenas with hordes of demons and shooting, shooting, shooting! The new game is just as dynamic as before, and against the backdrop of slow-paced shooters of recent years, this looks rather unusual. The hero rushes along the tangled corridors at such a speed that you don’t have time to think and hit the spring button. By the way, it’s not even there – it seems you can’t go much faster.

Running like that, it’s hard to balance your actions, and you need to shoot accurately, because ammunition is too valuable a resource to waste. And although the developers made the game according to outdated templates, one inalienable mechanics of modern shooters still leaked into it – upgrading. Now you can upgrade your costume and weapons. You’ll find it useful to bring down demons more efficiently, but the upgrades don’t really open any alternative game styles, so you won’t have to come up with any cunning tactics.

Almost all enemies are weaker than the hero and therefore try to prevail in number. And those rare species that pose a serious threat even individually also attack in swarms, which makes your quest even more challenging. Heavy metal rumbles from the speakers during every fight and programs for the only tactics that are right for this game – kill by all means. Kill faster, bigger, tougher. Throw grenades into a crowd of zombies turning them into dust. Carve off pieces of bodies with a chainsaw and use them to smash the hell out of the monsters surrounding you. Launch rockets at those attacking you from afar. Modify your shotgun to fire triples and burst the demons like balloons. Arranging genocide in hell is fun.

Multiplayer claims the right to be called old school no less than the solo campaign. This is a fast arena quake-style shooter game. Powerful weapons and runes periodically appear on the map, which makes it possible to turn into one of four demons with unique abilities. Among the usual game modes there is a pleasant surprise – Freeze Tag. The players are split into teams and are tasked to freeze the enemies and prevent them from melting ice to free their comrades. The team that freezes every member of the opposing gang wins. All this awaits you in Doom 2016!
