Doom isn’t just another shooter – it’s a full-fledged genre. There is nothing as brutal and crazy. ID Software first showed it to us three decades ago and is now about to demonstrate it once again. Doom Eternal became a splendid bottomline of the legendary franchise. Developers have put us on a bloody merry-go-round that keeps us on the fine line between fascination and nausea all the way. Are you ready to hop onto it?
Doom Eternal continues the story of the previous chapters and once again sends our hero to fight legions of hell threatening to conquer not only Mars and Earth, but also other planets. The insane tempo of the earlier versions became even faster. The amount of blood is stunning and the executions are so brutally spectacular that you never get tired of chainsawing hordes of Imps and tearing eyes out of Cacodemons. You won’t be able to sit another once out in a cozy shelter – you are always in the epicenter of the battle, constantly moving from monster to monster with the help of dashes or meat hook installed on an old-school shotgun.
Now you have to reap most of the resources from mobs. Executions of staggered enemies replenishes a lot of health, carving them with a chainsaw brings down a rain of ammo and setting demons on fire with a flamethrower gives you armor. You can play here without downloading. There are plenty of ways to deal with the vile creeps, but remember that even when you’re using a long-range weapon, it’s vital to stay on the move otherwise you won’t survive until the end of the level.
Your arsenal includes a good dozen of weapons that are unlocked gradually. But even after you gain access to more advanced firearms, you can still use your early guns effectively right until the finale. That partially has to do with the lack of cartridges – you will run out of them rather quickly, so there will be a chance to try out all of the weapons available so far. The most important thing, however, is that all monsters have their unique soft spots. That means you’ll have to switch between weapons to deal with all of them in the best possible way. For instance, Pain Elementals will be put down with a crossbow shot, drones are hard to kill other than from a sniper rifle, and Pinkies become an easy prey if you freeze them with a cryo grenade and shoot off their tails.
Don’t forget to use powerups and special perks to increase your chances of survival. For example, you can turn your machine gun into a mobile turret delivering colossal damage or activate an energy shield that will protect you from rockets. The whole process becomes even bloodier if you make wise use of traps placed on some locations. For instance, you can lure a couple of particularly meaty mobs to a platform, fire at the switch and watch a giant press shredding them into mince. All that makes the battle system both dynamic and highly versatile. The game forces you to instantly react to any threats, switch between shooting modes, pick a position for each weapon to avoid ammo waste. Don’t even hope to kill everyone by repeatedly clicking the left mouse button! Do you think you can take up that challenge? Then launch Doom Eternal online, see what it has in store for you and enjoy every bloody minute of the gameplay!
